Han Sun Hwa: “Kwanghee Keeps Asking for My Home Address”

On April 30, Secret hosted a show case to celebrate the release of their fourth mini album “Letter from SECRET” in Seoul, Korea. During the showcase, Han Sun Hwa talked briefly about ZE:A‘s Kwanghee, who is now her ex-husband from MBC “We Got Married.”

She said, “I saw Kwanghee’s cheerful messages on the internet and I was really thankful. I think because we had something special, I still feel tender about him and the whole thing. I texted him because I wanted to express how thankful I was to see him cheering for me outside of ‘We Got Married.’”

Han Sun Hwa added, “He texted me back asking for my home address. He said, ‘I want to send you some fruits,’ and he’s said that several times before. But I gently declined, because I’d feel like I’m getting stripped of my privacy if I give him my home address.” When the MC asked her what kind of fruits Kwanghee insisted on sending to her, she told the audience, “He’s been talking about sending me peaches for a while now.”

She also commented, “Now that I’m done with MBC ‘We Got Married,’ I want to focus on Secret and this promotion. We are going to go back and forth between Korea and Japan for the promotional cycle of our new single ‘YooHoo.’”

Secret’s new song “YooHoo” is of dance genre and the song lyrics express one’s smitten puppy love for a friend, on the verge of friendship and romance. The song successfully portrays Secret’s cute and liveliness with its upbeat melody. Secret will perform their first come back stage and officially start the promotional cycle of “YooHoo” on Mnet “M! Countdown” on May 2.

Despite Kwanghee and Sunhwa’s Tearful Farewell, “We Got Married” Ratings Continue to Decline

MBC “We Got Married Season 4” experienced another steep decline in ratings. According to Nielsen Korea, the episode of “We Got Married” that aired on April 13 had 6.3% in ratings, which nearly 2.0% lower than the week before. The April 6 episode of the show garnered 8.3% in ratings.

On this particular episode of “We Got Married 4,” Kwanghee and Sunhwa were getting ready for their farewell. They invited members of ZE:A, Secret, and 2PM‘s Taecyeon to their private photo exhibition. As they were reminiscing about their past eight months together as a virtually married couple, looking through all the pictures of themselves, Kwanghee and Sunhwa could not hold back their tears.

Since Kwanghee and Sunhwa were one of the main couples of “We Got Married 4,” the news about their departure from the show garnered many fans and netizen’s attention. However, both the production and cast members denied such news as rumors until the very last minute. Such ambivalent attitude of the show received much criticisms from fans and netizens. As a result, many fans, experts, and related officials expect Kwanghee and Sunhwa’s last farewell to have little impact on the show, even though they have been one of the most beloved WGM couples.

Moreover, “We Got Married 4″ is facing another problem as the hype about Jo Jung Chi-Jung In couple is now declining. They initially were very popular, as they have been together for 11 years and had many realistic concerns, episodes, and interactions as a couple, which were welcomed by the viewers in the beginning. However, even their real-life long term romance was not enough to save the show. Many experts are pointing out that although Jo Jung Chi and Jung In have become popular from their guest appearances on variety shows, they lack the stardom and experience in leading “We Got Married 4.”

With Kwanghee and Sunhwa leaving the show, “We Got Married 4″ is at a crucial moment. Although the show needs a new star couple to garner more positive attention, raise the ratings, and revive the show in general, many fans and related officials are also pointing out that this season of “We Got Married” has gone through too many couples already.

Side B: Hidden Secret

The wonderful ladies of Secret have been on the scene for a little over three years, and since their debut, they’ve been releasing music regularly, racking up a significant discography which worthily complements their promoted tracks. Having analyzed the concepts for each of the group’s promotional releases through documenting Secret’s journey through time, I decided to look through the rest of Secret’s music for hidden gems. To my delight, there were many.

Like other established girl groups that put out excellent tracks other than their promoted releases (2NE1, T-ara, and Wonder Girls), it’s evident that the producers behind Secret put in a solid effort at creating great music for the group with each and every release. Not only are its promoted songs catchy and attention grabbing, they’re also usually accompanied by high quality songs that populate a single, mini, or full album. While Secret’s promoted releases have gotten away from its original R&B sound over the years, its musical roots can still be found in many of its b sides. As always, let’s turn back the clock and start from the beginning.

New Year’s Eve brought us the MBC Gayo Daejejun, hosted by MBLAQ‘s Lee Joon, Girls’ Generation‘s Seohyun, Boom, and Lee Hwi-jae. It also brought us MBC’s traditional Blue team versus White team competition, splitting up the performers into two teams, allowing fans to text in their votes for each side during the show.

Ultimately it was the White team that came out on top, consisting of TVXQ, Big Bang, BEAST, Infinite, MBLAQ, B.A.P, Secret, Dynamic Duo, Primary, K.Will, KARA, After School, Girl’s Day, Son Dam-bi, 4minute, EXO-K, Koyote, Roh Ji-hoon, Big Star, A-JAX, and ZE:A‘s Kwanghee & Secret’s Sunhwa. The Blue team was made up of Super Junior, SHINee, f(x), COOL, 2NE1, Epik High, SISTAR, FT Island, CN Blue, 2AM, Juniel, Teen Top, B1A4, miss A, T-ara, A Pink, Dal Shabet, Ailee, 100%, Lee Hi, BTOB, and 2AM’s Jo Kwon & the Brown Eyed GirlsGa-in.(...)

Secret’s Hyosung Wishes SPICA’s Yang Ji Won a Happy Birthday

On April 5, Secret’s Hyosung left a message on her twitter, “Happy birthday to you. I would like to wish Ji Won, whom I love, a happy birthday. I will sing it to you live later! Congrats!”

Jun Hyosung and group SPICA’s Yang Ji Won were members of a prospective girl group Five Girls. Training for approximately two years with three other members, G.NA, After School’s Uee, and Wonder Girls’ Yoobin, Hyosung and Ji Won were planned to debut as Five Girls in 2007. However due to the financial problem of their agency, the group never made it.

However, although they became members of different groups, Hyosung and Ji Won still remained good friends.

Netizens that saw this message admired, “It is nice to see that they are close,” “All the members of Five Girls are beautiful and kind,” and “I hope they remain friends for a long time.”

Surviving the 2012 KBS Gayo Daejun

Friday the 28th of December saw KBS kick off the year-end festivities with the 2012 KBS Gayo Daejun, the first of three song festivals to be held for the year. As a start, though, this wasn’t so much a bang as it was a fizz.

KBS seems to have a reputation for the most lacklustre gayo daejuns, and that perception remains — the event felt more like an episode of Music Bank than anything, but a lacking one — save for Ailee, none of the 2012 rookies were in attendance, and YG groups were also nowhere to be seen, among others (*cough*Block B*cough*). In fact, the Christmas special from the previous week was a much more entertaining affair, making this even more disappointing by comparison.

Having made the mistake of livestreaming this gayo daejun, it was up to me to recap it; fortunately, Lindsay kindly volunteered to join me in reviewing the performances. Because many of the stages were only slightly different to those seen throughout the year, Lindsay and I have instead picked out the special stages, followed by our favourite performances.(...)

From Sexual to Sensual

When I first got into K-pop, I was wary of a lot of girl groups since I was uneasy with the whole cutesy to the point of infantile vibe they gave while still aiming for sex appeal. I watched with interest as K-pop began to depart from ‘cutesy’ and go towards the more overtly sexual and different groups pushed different boundaries. So When 2011 heralded the release of stuff like Rania’s “Dr. Feel Good” and HyunA’s “Bubble Pop”, I thought they were the ultimate signs of the future of a lot of girl groups – super blatant doses of female sexuality. However, after listening to/watching the past few comebacks from female artists, I’ve been noticing the opposite – a gradual shift away from overt sexuality to a more understated sensuality. Though it might be a bit too early to label it a trend, there is definitely a difference in not just the visuals but also the overall sound of releases from female groups that are really interesting to notice.

KpopCharts Update: That Caffeine Pop

Yoseob Caffeine

Yoseob Yang “Caffeine” – Vote for it Here!

It’s the best member of Batoost! The tiny one! Ok, we’re not sure if he’s actually the tiny one, if he’s smaller than other people, but he just looks, smaller, you know? We can’t say for sure, though. Online stats for Kpop idols always lie. ALWAYS LIE! Don’t believe em! Unless we stand beside him, we’ll never know. But that room he’s in suuuure does look big compared to him dancing on it…

But that’s not the point! Point is, one of our favorite bands’ members released a solo song. We like it. It’s cool. The song’s cool, video’s cool, and is just overall worth voting for. We’d have so much to say!

Secret “Talk That” – Vote for it Here!

This whole Secret thing is confusing to us. It should be something as simple as “They got in a car accident and will be recovering” but we have so many more thoughts about it. Firstly, you know our stance on driving in Korea. It sucks. Really sucks. We’ve been especially on our guard these past few days with the snowfall, because Korea doesn’t really get a lot of snow. To us as Canadians, we know that you drive differently when it starts to snow. We haven’t noticed a lot of people in Korea really changing their driving habits, though. For example: red light just changed to green, and the front row of cars have their tires spin out, because they want to gun it. WTF?!?!? Supposedly Secret’s car got into an accident when the driver was speeding on the highway and changing lanes.

Ah. I don’t even know what more to say here. STOP DRIVING LIKE MANIACS DAMN YOU!

Ok, enough of our bad driving rant. We’d like to take this time to encourage people to vote for Secret. We like them. We always say good things about them whenever we get the chance, and we really want girl groups to have more of a chance here. So vote for them!

Crayon Pop “Dancing Queen” – Vote for it Here!

So, our video was more of a talk about the KpopCharts and how impressed we are that Kpop companies are getting more interested in them, as in the case of Crayon Pop and Boyfriend. Yay! But we didn’t get a chance to talk much about the video, which – even though we use the same software – we enjoyed. It was fun! It was out there! It wasn’t dancing in a box, but dancing out in public. Also, I wonder if people watching this video think to themselves “wow: does Korea have random dance parties like that in public? BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!” No, friends: Korea does not have dancing parties like that sometimes. THEY HAVE THEM ALL THE TIME! HA no. We haven’t stumbled upon any dance sequences in public. We do notice lots of things being shot all the time, though. KBS and MBC always have their trucks out, we stumble past commercial shoots, walked passed a couple of dramas and reality TV shows. Anyone else living in Korea experience that, or do we just have freak luck?

Best of Weekly Music Shows: 12/3 – 12/9

And we’re back with another set of the best of the week’s music shows. This week, Mnet‘s M! Countdown was cancelled. MBC‘s Music Core aired a slew of performances from its Vietnam special, which brought back songs released earlier in the year from groups such as Infinite, Sistar, and B.A.P. In addition, SBS Inkigayo had two special MCs, CNBLUE‘s Yonghwa and BEAST‘s Kikwang, to accompany IU this week. Next week begins the next set of MCs for the music show: actor Lee Hyun-woo and ZE:A‘s Kwanghee along with the already present IU. Below are my picks for the week, but don’t forget to comment with your favorites!

SECRET’s Talk That, Sexy Yet Emotional

SECRET is back with a new song, with a totally different feel, after finishing their “Poison” promotions not too long ago. The new song, “Talk That,” was composed by Shinsadong Tiger and taps into Hyosung, Zinger, Sunhwa, and Ji-eun’s deep, emotional sides. While “Poison” had a hard-hitting sexy concept, “Talk That” now brings on the sad and serious, which fits in well with the other comebacks in the last couple of months (sequins and crying excessively are apparently still in style à la B1A4).(...)

Secret’s Hyosung Shows Off Smoking Hot Body in Singapore

Secret‘s Hyosung proved that she is the one true “bagel girl” at her solo stage performance in Singapore.

On March 29 Secret had their first concert in Singapore called “Secret Live in Singapore.” TS Entertainment shared pictures and a video of Hyosung’s solo performance, revealing her smoking hot body.

During her solo stage Hyosung performed Beyonce‘s “Crazy in Love,” wearing a revealing outfit combination of white shorts and a tank top. She held nothing back as she followed the powerful and sexy choreography and tried to work up the crowd.

Hyosung also shared a selca from her time in Singapore and TS Entertainment shared a behind the scenes video of all the Secret members enjoying their stay in Singapore.

Finding Their Niche: Secret’s Not So Secret Formula For Success

In today’s world of K-pop where debuts and comebacks occur on quite literally a daily basis, a K-pop act’s livelihood is largely determined on its ability to stay fresh and ahead of the curve in their stylistic concepts in order to attract enough attention from the public to stay relevant. With rookie groups debuting at an unprecedented rate, many of which impede upon if not totally rip off the original concepts of more established groups, veteran acts are forced to change up their concepts or undergo a stylistic 180 in order to stay distinct. Established groups elect to try on different concepts to keep fans guessing (SNSD), to (d)evolve from their original image due to member changes (After School), or to go in a different stylistic direction in order to detach themselves from an inferior concept (Chi-Chi). In doing so, maintaining a form of consistency from comeback to comeback proves to be difficult among a sea of changes.(...)

What’s Your Poison?

TS Entertainment‘s lovely quartet, Secret, has returned with a new EP Poison after a year of Japanese promotions. It’s been a year since their last Korean promotion for “Love is Move,” and with their rookie hoobaes B.A.P rocking out with great material, even though they should be getting some rest, here’s hoping that TS Entertainment has something great in store for Secret. 2012 seems to be a year of rookies and under the radar groups, like Sistar, 4minute, and ZE:A, really stepping it up to the plate, and giving some of the upper tier groups, at least from my perspective, a lot more competition in the musical department. Secret is indeed one of those under the radar groups and the solid talent the four ladies wield, combined with some well-produced music, they can crack the nugu status, or at least, gain a lot more exposure as a whole. I’ll admit that I haven’t been swayed by most of Secret discography as of late but fingers crossed that they raised my expectations of them as Sistar did earlier this year.(...)

KpopCharts Update: Poison Lipstick Wish

FT Island I Wish

FT Island “I Wish” – Vote for it here!

Wow! We totally forgot about FT Island! Seriously. And we’re not saying that in a bad way. It just seems like we’ve been talking about poppy, fun, electro music so much lately that we totally overlooked rock-y music. And we love FT Island, even if their last video was kinda illogical. Yeah! So, even though we really wanted to review a Girl Group this week (it’s been a bit of a sausage fest on Kpop Music Mondays lately), we still find FT Island a breath of fresh air. Just…not too sure about the Hunky One’s Tiara. Could that be a subliminal message to vote for T-ara? I THINK SO!

Orange Caramel “Lipstick” – Vote for it here!

Gangnam Style is going to be the most popular Kpop video of the year, without a doubt. Maybe it’ll be the most popular of all time. But this video, right here, is going to be one of our favourites of the year, almost as much as we love Gangnam Style. It’s so…just so wonderful. It’s so quirky and silly and fun. The slow motion shots of the dreamy guy, the wilting roses when he loses, the bride’s glowing eyes: this is…this is brilliant. Brilliant! And the song is so freaking fun! I’ve been singing it all day, even though I don’t know the words. Lipstick smee buh duh duh! I should probably look up the lyrics online.

Ah! It’s times like this we want to just review the videos we want to review. Don’t get us wrong: we’ve got nothing against FT Island or their new video, but it’s nowhere near as fun as this video, and we love fun videos :D

Secret “Poison” – Vote for it here!

Secret Shares Video From Their Time in Singapore

Popular girl group Secret recently had a concert in Singapore on March 29 and shared a video of the members enjoying their time there through the official TS Entertainment YouTube channel.

In the video we can see the members looking relaxed and comfortable as they ride yachts and spend some time on the beach. The girls looks radiant with their beautiful smiles, despite that they are all wearing hardly any make up. The girls seemed to have enjoyed their time in Singapore.

Jeon Hyo Sung and Han Sun Hwa also shared selcas from their trip, and Hyo Sung’s outfit may even look a bit familiar.

The title of their concert was “Secret Live in Singapore“, and Secret is the fourth K-Pop girl group to hold an exclusive concert in Singapore.
